Tom: Thanks for your comments. Would you be willing to share data relating to the load that you have to cope with, so that we can accurately factor this in to our testing?

Could I just point out that the only reason our DSpace instance here at Cambridge (http://www.dspace.cam.ac.uk/) doesn't crumple under the scale and load is that we're running several local patches to cope with the very bad design of DSpace's thumbnails, indexing, etc.

And still we have to restart the servlet container every night, lest we run out of memory (because there's at least still one memory leak in the code which we haven't managed to find yet).

Hi John.

I guess that if they can view an associated file (PDF etc) and it isn't on a publisher site where they have an agreement to harvest publications but not cache them, then they assume it is OA. Just a guess tough.

Thanks,

Hi Stuart,

thank you for pointing this out - do you have any idea how Google are determining that a particular version is OA?

I'm just wondering how applicable this might be to other types of open content (in repositories and elsewhere)

cheers,
John

Is there another search option in EPrints? The repositories I've tried all use /search/simple regardless of if they are performing a simple or more advanced search.

I've never tried monitoring other search parameters, but it might be an interesting thing to do. Assuming it works well, it might tell you what types of searches people are performing. For example are they just doing a free text search, or using filters to refine the search.

I'm going to try this for my repository... which is an E-Prints one. If I set the parameter as simple, as you instruct, presumably I only get it to track simple searches within my repository? So, I can put up to four other parameters in, to get G.A. to look at other types of search. Would I want to ask G.A. to monitor other search parameters, or would that just muddy my statistics?
By the way, I didn't know how to find the search parameters in E-prints, but I found out a simple way: if you do a search in your repository, you'll get a URL for the results page that will contain the search parameters you have used. I think the bits you can use are the labels that appear between an ampersand and an equal sign. Wierd that the full text parameter appears to begin with an underscore...

Hi Reuben,

Thanks for getting in touch. I've got that email sitting in my inbox waiting for me to get around to replying to it - sorry it has taken a little while.

What changes have you made to make it work with Active Directory?

It would be great if you could formally submit your patch to the DSpace patch queue (http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?atid=319984&group_id=19984&func=browse). There are a few of us working on a generic LDAP authenticator which will hopefully work with any AD / LDAP system, so it would be good to see what changes you've made to see if we can incorporate them too.

Thanks,
